I recall years ago when I was at my book club and we were discussing the book of the month as usual. The main topic was about the protagonist and how she left her home and children because of circumstances many of us could not even imagine.

One of the members spoke up and said "I don't understand this.  I would never leave my children".  Another woman said "You cannot know someone else's struggle unless you have walked in her shoes"  (Which makes for a very good discussion wouldn't you agree?)

It was clear this story and comment struck a chord within her.  She is a successful single mom of two and it had to have been hard for her along the way.  Who knows what judgments or assumptions people had toward her?

We are all more than one note and no one is perfect.

Life can put us through some really rough times and also give us more joy than we can contain.

None of us gets through without struggle.  So why do we judge and miss out on an opportunity learn and grow?

People make assumptions and judge for a variety of reasons:

The very simplest and most basic reason is safety. Where are they in comparison to others?  Lesser or greater? This originates from the hunt-or-be-hunted mentality.  It provides a position on how they measure up and how to respond.

But taken further, it gives people a way to feel more powerful and in control of their lives -most will agree, this is typical - and it shuts out any opportunity to learn.

Consider how utterly powerful it would be to resist judgment and try to better understand each other.

What if we took it further? Into our own lives, careers, and businesses?  The first thing we ought to do is "walk in other's shoes" to not judge but to learn and change our perspective.

You see, if we don't truly know the story, we may be missing an incredible opportunity to learn, grow and make better choices and decisions.

A guest on my podcast pointed out a powerful moment when she did just that.   Lin Isley leads a team to support and place unhoused families throughout Los Angeles.

She shares an experience when she recognized someone she personally knew on the list needing temporary housing and support, and the actions she took. Life can happen to any of us.  Listen now

If we pause, learn, and understand - we can respond more effectively in life, career, and business.

In turn....we learn to look through different eyes and perhaps find a way to answer an unmet need instead of going along with preconceived notions.

Something to think about as we enter the season of giving and a new year where we may be seeking our NEXT in life, career, or in our business.

Empathy is the first step.

Perhaps we can begin to learn and know what we don't know.

Whether just starting out, or starting again - NEXT encourages us to rethink and design how we live and work - empowering us to continue to remain relevant throughout life
