Content? Or Complacent?

#addvalue #challenge #complacency #contenment #growth #remainrelevant Feb 02, 2023

Thomas Edison said: " We shall have no better conditions in the future if we are satisfied with all those which we have at present."

We have known or may know that person who has always done things a 'certain way' and when it is time to change...There is most definitely pushback "If it works don't fix it" and they forgo making any improvements.

But we know that without change we are not growing, learning, and evolving and that is vital for us to continue to make our lives, careers, and businesses thrive and remain relevant.

Does that make the 'don't fix it types'  complacent? Complacent is often interpreted as laziness and that could be the issue. or perhaps they are not comfortable initiating change?  It risks what they believe is a certainty and they don't want to disrupt what is currently working.

Life, businesses, and the world evolves and so we must also continue to assess and look where change may be necessary.

We are living longer lives, and our careers and businesses will change whether we initiate it or not.

Too often people struggle to keep things at a certain level of comfort when it is no longer sustainable and when innovation is necessary for continued growth and fulfillment.

History has shown us the downfall of complacency and powerful leaders and philosophers have warned against it. Yet, it is pretty appealing to rest on our successes, is that contentment?

Contentment is choosing to be happy and fulfilled where we are while having the confidence to continue to self-evaluate and discern where we can grow, learn, and bring value to our work, our business, our lives, and the world.

So what keeps us content yet working towards improvement?

  • Continuing to challenge ourselves - learning and growing - small wins build confidence
  • Understand that all things are not sustainable forever and that we benefit when we embrace change
  • Find what is good daily (content) and also find what could be improved
  • Don't get too comfortable

The impetus to "rest on our laurels" is a strong one and we should take a moment to find contentment in what has been achieved, but our lives, careers, and businesses must evolve and change in order to remain relevant.

Whether just starting out, or starting again - NEXT encourages us to rethink and design how we live and work - empowering us to continue to remain relevant throughout life
