“I am sorry to tell you…we have to let you go.”

How many of us have been delivered this news? It comes like a punch to the gut and the mind spirals. What will I do next

I’ve known many who saw it coming but hesitated to take control of their situation until it was too late. While it’s never a welcome moment, sometimes it’s a necessary one.

Most often our immediate response is panic, followed by a range of emotions from anger and denial to devastation and desperation as we pick up the pieces and try to imagine what’s next.

I’ve mentored women who have been treated terribly and/or let go even after years of success.

I understand the disappointment and devastation and every other emotion that comes with the loss of a job, no matter the reason and which for most is a life-altering event. Our emotions are valid and feeling them is necessary. But we are not doing ourselves any favors by marinating in our negative thoughts. We need to give ourselves a set period of time to grieve the loss and then get into action.

I believe that when one door closes, another one will open.

The loss of a job can be a chance to grow, seek new opportunities, pivot, or re-direct our energies so we can shine, stay relevant and contribute in a different way.

Ageism and age gaps that we are seeing in the workforce can be looked at this in the same way.  While painful and disappointing, this could also be an opportunity for growth into another path where our best can be utilized

For many, growth might mean a significant change and the desire to become an entrepreneur as options to find viable employment that matches your level of skill become less as we get past- yes, 42

But how do we transition from a career in the corporate world to one in which we’re in charge?  How do we re-package our knowledge and expertise into a satisfying career next chapter?
