I remember sitting on a panel at a University speaking to new grads and alumni about being an entrepreneur and the successes I have experienced. (If you've spoken on these before to people just getting started, they very much need to hear Success Stories)
But another panelist who had built a successful company spoke about the stresses of building his company with investors and then having to report to them on profits, numbers and the state of the business. He had to really to grind...not only for his company but because they want results. Requiring decisions and operating in a way he was not pleased with. In a nutshell, you could hear that he did not take this into consideration before the investors agreed to invest. He thought he would have his own business, make it his way and...all he needed was the money to do it.
I get it. When we are building a company, we need money to scale when its time. But (he is younger than I and this is his first large enterprise) I could tell he regretted that LEAP decision he made. I don't know if he is still in business but I can pretty much guarantee if the numbers weren't showing....he had to close. All his efforts thwarted.
Then, I answered a question about successes...I can't recall it, but I did say "It is imperative that you come from a place of HAVE and not NEED...otherwise you will find you will end up with even bigger NEEDS" This guy on the panel totally agreed. (The audience? They looked as if I had remarked that I like standing in long lines at the airport)
Why did I make that statement?? Because I have done it. I have toiled, slayed, forced and worked very hard only to find out I didn't bargain well. I got what I wanted: The Prize, but the costs were great.
Mentors help with making huge decisions like this. Take your time. You HAVE all that you NEED and if you SHOW UP and do the work - with intention. Things really do come to you.
I have experienced this over and over. Both ways. (Gave up the "I will force it" idea)
