Sense of Self? Or Selfish?

When I was younger, chasing after my toddler daughter and running my business, I had an older woman in my life who would say to me.."You have such a sense of self".

It got me thinking. Does that mean I am selfish?  She knew me and how much time I devoted to my family, my work...and that I saved a smidge of time for myself...Did I have guilt about that? Perhaps. And maybe that is what got me thinking about my sense of self.

However, this woman loved me and I knew she truly was paying me a compliment.

Perhaps in that harried, frenzied time of my life...She saw me clearly devoting myself to what mattered to me and also refilling my 'well' so I could be my best for my family, and work, and stay sane - or at least try.

As my life has expanded, contracted, and changed, I have always had that 'sense of self'. I knew where was best and where I wasn't.  Holding boundaries for myself and others.  Modeling behaviors that would help my daughter navigate her life journey.

She knows her talents and strengths, capabilities, and limits so she can find what fits her best in life and career instead of her trying to fit into roles that may not work for her.

NEXT is about revisiting our gifts, recognizing our strengths, acknowledging our core values, and living life from there.

I am no longer chasing after my children or building my company.  I am on a different path where I can use my gifts and strengths to meet a need, for something meaningful.

But I continue to keep in mind where I am at my best and where my limits are in life and career.

"Sense of self depends on not only recognizing your strengths but also believing in your capabilities to use them to achieve your goals. Having a good handle on your talents and maximizing them in your day-to-day life often means you have a healthy sense of self."  - Mental Well-being/Healthline

I am thankful for the life I have lived - not always an easy one for sure - but it helped me to become resilient and able to not lose my 'sense of self' along life's winding path.

As we turn the corner and share Thanksgiving together, I am thankful for all the challenges that have made me who I am and for the people in my life who have had an influence on me.
